Searching for a Better Future
Earlier this month, I had the distinct honor of speaking at the German-American Chamber of Commerce Gateway Awards. Forge has had the privilege of working with many German, Italian, and other European companies as they put down roots or expand in the United States.
Part of what I said on stage was this: My great-great-grandparents immigrated from Germany to the United States years ago, in search of a better future. They brought with them determination, grit, an undeniable work ethic, and the German penchant for directness. ;)
Along with the millions of other immigrants who have shaped America into what it is today, they believed there was a better life out there, and they sought it out.
Many of the companies coming to the US and establishing a presence believe the opportunities are numerous. As they arrive, these companies build something step by step, and what amazes me most is how they adapt - integrating their own ways of doing business while merging with our culture here. It’s not just about growth in size or revenue, but also about shaping an identity in a new place—finding belonging while holding on to their roots.
The same is true for American-born companies (like Forge!) seeking to grow. We are all building something for the next generation.
On an early morning run this past Sunday, with the sun peeking over the horizon, I thought a lot about this: growth and identity and searching.
When we are at our best, we are seeking a better future, a better iteration of ourselves. We are growing and changing and developing.
Just like an athlete who keeps on pushing for the next best, we should never stop working to become better humans, better parents, better colleagues, better visionaries. Each one of us has a light and a gift to give the world.
Sometimes that means getting a new job. Sometimes it means sticking it out where you’re at. Only you can control how you show up.
How are you building for a better future today?
